Ebay Scam

A bit out of the ordinary this blog, but it’s a scam that could catch anyone out because it looks like a genuine interest in a product you have for sale.

Basically, I was selling a game on Ebay, and I got an e-mail through that was from a Simon Roud, and it went something like this:

Hi ,
I’m very interested in the eBay item you have for sale.
Please take a look over and let me know if the item is still available:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280401093194
If Yes, do you accept cash on collection? or if not I’ll pay by pay pal. (preferably cash since I hate paypals fees).
Looking for your fast answer.
Regards!

Not being fooled too easily, I hovered my cursor over the link (for the purpose of this exercise, the link above links to WordPress) and it would have taken me to some Russian site that looks to be selling cars – either way, the website could be infected and if you receive ANYTHING like the above, do not do a thing! Except report it immediately to spoof@ebay.co.uk.

Simon Roud asked for a fast answer, and so here it is – “bugger off”.

Now I’m off to play Alpha Centuari see you later!

Regards,
Matty

    Great post.

Perhaps I can just add to this that the best way to guard against being ripped off by online sales or auctions of any kind, Craigslist and eBay included—and whether seller or buyer—is to use a *bona fide* online escrow company. Especially for pricier items like antiques, jewelry and autos. Although it does add some cost, it takes the uncertainty out of the transaction, and that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

For my money, the best bona fide online escrow (and there seems to be ten fraudulent escrow sites for every bona fide one) is probably Escrow.com (http://escrow.com). In fact, it’s the only one that eBay recommends, and is the only online escrow company that is licensed to provide escrow services all across the United States.

    Take care,

This guy bought a authentic Rolex from us, sent a fake one back. Paypal and eBay does not protect the seller.

Chris – firstly, allow me to express my sheer disappointment at your customers behaviour. I can’t believe people actually have the audacity to pull moves like that, but unfortunately there are people out there who are going to take advantage of the loopholes present in E-Commerce, and this is a fine example. Especially by the fact its such a high ticket priced item.

I think there is still a long way to go for people like Ebay and PayPal to plug these loopholes, but until then we have to be wary.

have you put a claim in? I’d be interested to hear what PayPal / Ebay have to say…?

    Hi Matty,

I have to say we have been doing this for a long and have had over one thousand of most excellent customers. To improve our system we no longer take Paypal.
Yes we did do a claim and are working with only the authorities now. Here is Paypal’s final response letter. I have removed the email and phone numbers of my rep. My rep is a great guy and others above him made the call making him the messenger.

    Dear Chris,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I have spoken with that department a couple of times, along with my manager and with eBay concerning this situation. Your appeal has been denied. There are no other actions I can take to reverse that decision. I do not know what you can do in order to prevent this from happening again. This leaves you in a very bad spot.

What can I say other than I sorry.
