Keep your MP3s organised

If you are an avid music fan like myself, you will find that the quantity of MP3s you collect starts to grow to what may seem an unmanagable amount. What was starting to annoy me was the fact that when I transferred my music to my mobile to listen to, some albums were missing artwork, some were missing album names, sometimes a combination of both.

It was by this point that I wanted to clean up my MP3 collection, each with the correct track name, number, artwork, artist etc. so whatever platform they were on, bang – they were organised.

I started to hunt for a suitable piece of kit which would do this for me. I found tidy songs, which looked to do the work. Upon downloading it (having had to install Adobe AIR, no problem), it’s only for ITunes. Nevermind, I went on the hunt again.

I then found mp3tag. Boy I’m glad I found that! Let me explain…

An MP3 has an ID3 tag, which contains information about that MP3 file – which album is it from, the artist, the artwork, needless to say, the track name! Software reads this informaton to organise your MP3s and display them, ready for you to play. However, some CD rippers save half of this information, and you may have to put this missing information in.

With MP3tag, it reads your collection (by telling it where your MP3s are located), brings up the information for each MP3 and away you go! You can even connect to either freedb or Amazon to download track details, including artwork. Nifty. Oh yes, and it’s free.

So now, I have a clean collection of music. And please, remember to back it all up afterwards!
